Chin Augmentation/Implants

On the long list of beauty features that we as a society tend to obsess over, the chin doesn’t typically get mentioned that much. Crow’s feet, jowls, marionette lines, brow furrows and laugh lines are all little reminders of aging that we tend to fret over, and that the anti-aging industry fixates on. However, one feature that is largely overlooked for its impact on overall beauty is the chin.

Think about the typical model you see when thumbing through the pages of a magazine. Both men and women tend to share some common features when it comes to the chin and jaw. Sharp jawline definition and adequate chin projection are hallmarks of a beautiful face. Think Angelina Jolie, Olivia Wilde, Rob Lowe and Brad Pitt. A well-defined jaw and contoured neck have been a traditional sign of attractiveness since the Egyptian era.

The chin plays an important role in delineating youthful and angular qualities of the lower face. For men, a strong chin is typically associated with an idealized portrait of strength and masculinity. The chin also plays an important role in creating a beautifully feminine face. While society generally associates a pointy chin with femininity, there are many attractive women that have a square chin rather than a pointy one. The most important factor here is the presence of a well-projected chin. When one has a lack of chin projection (or a weak chin), the nose can often appear larger and the neck may look less defined and even saggy.

Chin augmentation surgery can increase chin projection and create a stronger and more defined profile. Chin implants are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate each patient’s individual goals and unique facial structure. The size, shape and type of implant that is best for you will be determined during your consultation with cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Bittar.

During chin augmentation surgery, a small incision is made either beneath the chin or inside the mouth. A pocket for implant placement is created in front of the chin bone and underneath the muscles. The implant is then precisely placed and secured in front of the bone and sutures are used to close the incision.

Following your chin augmentation procedure, you will experience some swelling and soreness. The majority of swelling and bruising will typically resolve within a week. You may also feel some numbness in the chin following surgery. This usually diminishes within several months, at which point your chin implant should be just about completely healed.

After chin augmentation, patients see a dramatic improvement in their profile, with the implant creating a cleaner, sharper angle under the chin while making the neck appear less slack. A chin implant also has the effect of making the nose appear smaller. Many times, patients will actually have chin augmentation performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty (nose job) and neck lift surgery to maximize results and create optimal facial symmetry.
