Botox is a remarkably effective treatment for diminishing the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. It is one of the world’s most commonly performed cosmetic treatments, and also one of the safest. For most of our Austin Botox patients, coming in for treatment a few times a year is an essential part of their beauty regimen, not unlike visiting the hairstylist every few months.
Botox is an affordable means of improving your look without having to miss work for surgery. The injections visibly soften frown lines (between the eyebrows), crow’s feet (around the eyes) and other signs of facial aging. If you’re looking for a way to stave off the signs of aging and delay the need for more invasive plastic surgery, then BOTOX may be the right choice for you!
How Does Botox Work?
Botox addresses facial aging caused by repetitive muscle movements. Most of us don’t realize that there are 43 individual muscles in the face. These muscles are habitually contracting and relaxing throughout the day. They allow us to express a wide range of emotions and enable us to do a variety of other day-to-day functions like chewing, swallowing, talking and more. Repetitive expressions are one of the major causes of wrinkle formation. These repetitive muscle movements wrinkle the skin using a similar pattern over and over again. As the years pass, these wrinkles become “etched” into the skin, forming permanent lines.
Botox, which is made from a purified protein, diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by essentially “turning off” a few muscles that contribute largely to the formation of these lines and wrinkles (such as the forehead muscles). The injections work by blocking the release of a key chemical, known as acetylcholine, preventing the transmittal of signals from nerve cells to muscles. This effectively relaxes the facial muscles, causing the overlying skin to become smoother and less wrinkled.
What to Expect During Botox Injections
Botox injections are typically administered under the skin by Dr. Bittar, into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow’s feet and ‘worry lines.’ This gives the face a more rejuvenated appearance while softening harsh lines. The effects of Botox treatment typically last anywhere from 4 – 6 months, after which point you can return for repeat injections. This varies from patient to patient.
A typical Botox procedure usually takes around 15 minutes and you will be able to resume normal activity right away. There is no down-time associated with this procedure, though directly after treatment you may have some very mild red spots at the injection sites. Any residual bruising from the injections can easily be covered up with makeup.
It will take a few days for the results of your Botox treatment to become fully apparent. Sometimes it can take up to 7 – 10 days for Botox injections to take full effect.

OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS): BOTOX
WHAT IS BOTOX EXACTLY?
Botox Cosmetic is a drug made from a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, called botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin blocks the release of a chemical called acetylcholine, which plays a key role in the communication between nerves and muscle cells. This toxin effectively prevents muscles from receiving nerve stimulation, causing a reduction in abnormal muscle contraction. This allows the muscle to become less stiff which causes the overlying skin to soften and smooth out.
IF BOTOX IS A TOXIN, HOW IS IT SAFE?
Words like poison and toxin naturally cause people to ask “Is Botox safe?” Botox injections are very safe when performed by a trained professional (a licensed, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Bittar, or a dermatologist). Botulinum toxin can safely be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations.
Botox was first approved by the FDA in 1989 for the treatment of two eye muscle disorders, making it the first botulinum toxin type A product approved in the world. In order for a drug to pass FDA approval, it must first endure rigorous testing to establish its safety. In addition to 20+ years of clinical experience, the safety and efficacy of Botox has been well-established in approximately 50 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. The drug has been used millions of times and its safety record is one of the best.
DOES BOTOX HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
Like any medical treatment, Botox can have potential side effects, though they are very rare. The most common side effects include some redness and swelling at the injection site. This usually resolves within a couple hours. Rarer side effects can include bruising, swelling, bumps or lumps. Patients taking blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen are at a higher risk for bruising after Botox injections.
HOW MUCH BOTOX DO I NEED?
Every Botox case is highly specific and the number of units required to treat each area differs based on patient needs and goals. A unit is simply a standardized amount designed to be readily reproducible. Each vial of Botox Cosmetic normally contains 100 units. Below are some common averages regarding Botox per unit for particular areas.
- Glabella (area between the eyes): between 10-30 units
- Correction of crow’s feet bilaterally: 18-24 units
- Horizontal forehead lines: 8-25 units
- Eyebrow lift: 2-5 units
- Upper vertical lip lines: 4-8 units
- Marionette lines bilaterally: 2-8units
- Smile lift (corners of mouth): 3-6 units
- Chin dimpling: 4-8 units
- Bunny lines on the nose: 5-10 units
Please keep in mind that the above are merely averages. A patient may require more or less than the average listed depending on their muscle strength.
HOW MUCH DOES BOTOX COST?
At The Beau Visage Center, we offer competitive pricing and frequently run Botox specials. Be sure to check our homepage regularly or contact us for Botox deals in Austin, Texas.
Nationally, Botox prices tend to range between $10 and $16 per unit. Costs vary due to a number of factors including geographic location, the expertise of the injector and who the injector is (physician, registered nurse or medical assistant).
Many individuals looking for affordable Botox will start their search with inquiries like “cheap Botox Austin” or “discount Botox Austin.” While most reputable aesthetic practices do offer great Botox sales from time to time, it’s important that you do research on the experience and reputation of the physician you are choosing. Sometimes, inexperienced doctors or those with negative reputations may lower their rates to try and attract new patients and build their practice.
When it comes to something as important as your face, you want to make sure that your physician is highly experienced and has an excellent track record with the procedure. If you’re looking for the best Botox physician in Austin, it’s a good idea to seek out a plastic surgeon that specializes in facial aesthetics, like Dr. Anthony Bittar.
A facial plastic surgeon will have the deep understanding of the complex structure of the face and the relationship that each feature has with another that is essential to getting natural-looking results. For this reason, price-shopping is not the best way to go about finding the best Botox doctor in your area.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX?
The best candidates for Botox treatment are typically individuals between the ages of 25 and 65, though some individuals choose to start getting injections sooner as a preventative measure. For individuals over the age of 65, wrinkles are often “static” and do not change when relaxing the muscles. However, this can only be determined by meeting personally with a physician to discuss your individual case. Patients over the age of 65 often benefit from a combination of treatments which may include Botox, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing or surgical procedures.
HOW LONG WILL THE BOTOX INJECTIONS TAKE?
The great thing about Botox treatment is that the procedure can be completed relatively quickly and takes little time out of your busy schedule. A typical Botox treatment session can last anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. This of course varies based on individual patient needs and the extent of treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE BOTOX INJECTIONS?
Ice packs are typically applied after Botox injections to prevent any redness and swelling. If you do experience redness and swelling after Botox injections, this will usually go away within 10 – 15 minutes. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities. Some patients may be advised by their doctor to avoid strenuous activity right after their procedure. However, this period is usually no longer than a day.
HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE THE FULL EFFECTS OF BOTOX TREATMENT?
Most patients will begin to see some softening of lines within 2 – 4 days of treatment. The full effect of relaxing the targeted muscles should be seen by 2 weeks post-treatment.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?
When injected properly by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon at the appropriate dilution and with proper technique, Botox should last anywhere from 4 to 6 months. However, patients new to Botox may start to see a return of movement to paralyzed muscles 2 – 4 months after treatment. Patients that have regular Botox injections tend to require less over time and can often stretch out their injections to every 6 months.
WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO MOVE MY FACE?
Yes, if the treatment is done appropriately by an experienced injector, you will still have facial expressions while maintaining a relatively smooth forehead. The goal of Botox treatment is to soften and smooth problematic lines while maintaining natural movement of the face. The dose and site of injections is customized to each patient’s needs and goals. Although some patients want to eradicate wrinkles completely, most individuals want to look naturally more youthful.
HOW IS BOTOX DIFFERENT FROM DYSPORT?
Both products are made of a protein called botulinum toxin type A. Dysport marketers often tout their product as “faster-acting” than Botox and having a greater spread, which they claim to give a more natural look. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. It may be favorable for treating larger areas like the armpits, as fewer injections would be required. On the flipside, if the physician does not have a thorough understanding of the more complex musculature around the eyes and brows, the Dysport could spread into unwanted areas.
In terms of pricing, it takes around 2.5 to 3 units of Dysport compared to 1 unit of Botox to achieve the same effect . Dysport units are typically about 1/3 the price of Botox units so the price really isn’t all that different. Overall, Dysport and Botox results have been found to be quite comparable.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS?
Botox is a muscle paralysis agent that diminishes the appearance of wrinkles by targeting the underlying muscles that cause them. It works by softening certain facial muscles to decrease facial motion and help eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, represent a wide spectrum of products that aim to restore lost facial volume.
Popular fillers like Juvederm, Radiesse and Restylane are injected into the skin and work by filling in fine lines, wrinkles and creases. These injectables are also used to add shape and youthful volume to the cheeks, chin and jawline.
Many dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring substance in the skin that contributes to volume and hydration. When injected into the skin, the HA acts much like a sponge, attracting and absorbing water, giving the skin a plump, hydrated look. Many dermal fillers also stimulate the natural production of collagen in the skin, further adding to the volumization effect.
IS IT SAFE TO GET BOTOX TREATMENTS DURING PREGNANCY?
Botox is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. No studies have been performed to determine the safety of Botox during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as such a study would be considered unethical. Since it is unknown whether Botox is excreted in breast milk, it is advised that mothers hold off and only resume Botox treatments once they are through breastfeeding.
CAN BOTOX LIFT MY EYEBROWS?
Our faces have muscles that pull in opposing directions, and in the case of the brow, there are muscles that pull down the eyebrows, and likewise, muscles that lift up the eyebrows. A highly skilled Austin Botox brow lift specialist like Dr. Bittar can carefully inject just the muscles that pull down, giving the eyebrows a slight lift. Most patients can expect 2 millimeters of lift, which may not sound like a lot, but actually provides a nice degree of improvement, making the eyes look more open and alert.
DOES BOTOX WORK FOR LIPS?
If your objective is fuller lips, you would benefit more from dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane. Botox can be used to diminish the appearance of wrinkles above the lips or “smoker’s lip lines”. However, for lip augmentation, soft tissue fillers are ideal for creating supple, natural-looking lips.
CAN BOTOX BE USED TO RAISE THE CORNERS OF A DROOPY MOUTH?
Yes, Botox can be injected into the anguli oris muscle, which controls the action of frowning. Using a very low dosage, Botox can relax this muscle and free the corners of the mouth to return to a more natural appearance.
Often, in the treatment of “drooping mouth corners,” a combination of Botox and fillers will be used. While Botox targets the muscle to provide a lifting effect, the facial filler complements this by filling in or filling out sagging mouth corners.
There is no cookie-cutter approach when it comes to correcting a droopy mouth. The type of filler that will give you the best results will depend on the degree of aging in the region of the mouth corner.
