ACNE SCAR TREATMENT OPTIONS
Those who have suffered from acne know the damaging physical and emotional effects this condition can have. In Austin, Dr. Anthony Bittar, M.D. is a clinical expert not only in plastic surgery but also in various other non-invasive cosmetic procedures, including acne scarring treatment. These treatments provided by Dr. Bittar and his professional staff include non-surgical aesthetic procedures such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing and microdermabrasion to improve acne and/or acne scarring on the skin. Depending on the severity of your condition and your desired results, these treatments are recommended individually for each patient and customized to your needs.
CHEMICAL PEELS FOR ACNE SCARS
Chemical peels can be a great non-surgical solution to help reduce mild to moderate acne scarring. We offer both Glycolic and Salicylic peels, as well as a TCA chemical peel, which is intended to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles. These procedures help to exfoliate and remove the surface layer of hyperpigmentation and/or damaged skin, and help uncover a glowing, fresh complexion.
Our acne chemical peel products, such as the TCA and Salicylic acid peel, are ideal for acne, hyperpigmentation and unclogging and reducing the appearance of pores. These peels act as an anti-inflammatory, helping to immediately reduce the inflammation of acne. Chemical peels work to diminish the appearance of facial acne scars by removing the outer layers of skin. After the healing period, the new skin that emerges is softer and smoother. This process of regenerating the skin and improving skin texture will improve the appearance of acne scars and depending on the severity of the scar, can potentially eliminate it outright.
MICRODERMABRASION AND DERMAPLANING
Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are acne scarring treatments aimed at retexturing the skin’s surface to reveal brighter, glowing skin underneath the outer dermis. While microdermabrasion uses microcrystals to remove fine lines and imperfections, dermaplaning uses a technique that repairs visible damage while also exfoliating the outer layer of skin to uncover that radiant glow.
LASER TREATMENT FOR ACNE SCARS
You may also be a candidate for a laser treatment, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Photorejuvenation, to improve scarring; however you must first discuss this with a professional. Dr. Bittar also uses CO2 laser skin resurfacing for acne scars and wrinkle reduction.
COMBINED TREATMENT APPROACH
Many of our Austin patients contact us inquiring about plastic surgery for acne scars or “acne cosmetic surgery.” However, at this time, there is no all-inclusive acne scar surgery that will make a severe acne scar disappear forever. Rather, the non-surgical treatments mentioned above will make a scar less noticeable. If your acne scarring is superficial, then one or more of these treatments can help eliminate the scar through the removal of the outermost layers of skin. Typically, with facial scar treatment, great results can be achieved through a combined approach that incorporates several modalities. For instance, facial treatment for acne scars may include a series of chemical peels coupled with laser resurfacing for additional collagen induction. A consultation with one of our skin care experts will help you decide which treatment regimen is best for your needs.
